Coping with Change in Life: How to Make It Easier on Yourself

Why do we find it so tough when it comes to coping with change? Not all change is bad, right? Imagine going on a vacation to the mountains or visiting a beautiful beach resort—now that’s a change we all welcome, isn’t it? Getting that promotion you’ve worked so hard for? Feels amazing! And meeting your soul mate or welcoming your first child? Life-changing in the best way!

Coping with change in life

These are examples of changes that range from small, temporary shifts to major life events. So, why is it that we can adapt to something as monumental as bringing a new life into the world but struggle with something as simple as starting a new exercise routine?

The Role of Your Subconscious in Coping with Change in Life

The answer lies in our subconscious mind, which can act like a stubborn 3-year-old when it comes to change. It loves taking the easy route and sticking to what’s familiar. The main job of our subconscious mind is to protect us, so it rarely considers different options because, in its eyes, change can be risky. Why mess with something that’s worked for years?

But here’s the truth: at some point, we all need to face change—whether it’s voluntary or forced. Forced change is beyond our control, so let’s focus on what we can control: voluntary change. The challenge with change often lies in the cycle we find ourselves in.

Breaking the Cycle: Coping with Change in Life

Change Cycle

The first step in this cycle is recognizing that you’re discontent with something. You think, “It’s just a small thing; it’ll pass.” So, you ignore it and move on. But that feeling doesn’t go away—in fact, it intensifies. Eventually, it becomes a problem, and you realize something has to change. You’re ready, motivated, and fired up. You start researching, planning, and sharing your amazing new plan with everyone.

Then, the subconscious mind kicks in, bringing along its old pals—doubt and anxiety. You start second-guessing yourself and worrying about the consequences. Fear starts whispering, “Is the situation really that bad? Maybe I’m just overreacting.”

Before you know it, you’re back where you started, and the cycle begins again. But each time, the discontent grows until it becomes unbearable, forcing you to change.

The Two Paths: Which Will You Choose?

So, how do we cope with change in life?

You have two options: the painful way, where life forces you to change because you’ve reached your breaking point, or the proactive way, where you acknowledge that something isn’t working and choose to embrace change and take action.

Which path will you choose? Remember, change doesn’t have to be a struggle. When you take control, it becomes less daunting and more empowering. So, the next time you feel that nagging discontent, see it as a signal that it’s time to embrace the awesome opportunities that come with change.
