The Science behind the Law of Attraction
You’ve probably heard of “The Law of Attraction,” and maybe you’ve even read The Secret or watched the documentary. For some, the idea that the universe gives us what we focus on seems like wishful thinking. For others, it’s a truth that guides their lives. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, this article will shed some light on the science and psychology behind the concept. And yes, The Law of Attraction really does have some science to back it up!
What Is The Law of Attraction?
At its core, The Law of Attraction is a universal principle that states: what you give your energy and attention to is what you attract into your life. When you focus on abundance, you draw more abundance toward you. If you focus on the negative, well, you get more of that too. Depending on the source, there are several “laws” that form the foundation of The Law of Attraction:
- The Law of Manifestation – Your thoughts and feelings create your reality.
- The Law of Magnetism – Your life’s experiences are the result of the energy you put out into the world.
- The Law of Unwavering Desire – True manifestation requires a strong belief that what you want is already on its way.
- The Law of Delicate Balance – The universe operates in balance; what you give, you must also receive.
- The Law of Harmony – When you’re in sync with your surroundings, life flows more easily.
- The Law of Right Action – Your actions and words impact your experiences and the world around you.
- The Law of Universal Influence – Everything is interconnected, and your energy vibrations influence the fabric of the universe.
How Does The Law of Attraction Work?
One of the main ideas behind The Law of Attraction is that what you desire already exists in the universe—you just have to ask for it. The process is simple: first, ask the universe for what you want, typically through affirmations or intention statements. Next, believe with all your heart that it’s coming your way. Finally, push positive energy into the universe by being grateful for what you have and what’s on its way.
How does it really work?
Now, let’s dive into the science part—how does this all work in our brains? At any moment, our brains are bombarded with millions of bits of information from our surroundings. But here’s the kicker: our conscious minds can only process about 40–60 bits per second. To stay efficient, our brains filter this massive flow of information, passing through only what our unconscious mind deems important.
For Example: When we see a fluffy four-legged animal with an attitude problem. We receive the information into our unconscious mind. It then passes through our filters, and from previous experience and memory we know that it is a cat. Our brain doesn’t have to figure it out every time. If we had never seen a cat before we may think it’s a strange type of bunny or a dog. That is if we had seen a dog or bunny before. At some point we then learn that it’s a cat and not a dog or a bunny and it becomes a memory.
The Reticular Activating System (RAS): Your Brain’s Filter
The part of our brain that is responsible for the filtering that happens in our unconscious mind is our Reticular Activating System (RAS). This part of our brain is responsible for our wakefulness, ability to focus, fight or flight response as well as the way in which we perceive the world. One could say the RAS works a lot like a social media algorithm. It only presents us with the information that is important to us at the time based on our beliefs, values, and past experience.
It is the reason why when we buy a new car we suddenly start seeing that same model everywhere. Even though we didn’t notice them previously before we bought that specific model of car. Our RAS simply deleted the information and never presented it to our conscious mind as it wasn’t regarded as important. The RAS is also the part of our brain that allows us to have a conversation with someone in a noisy space. It focuses on the conversation and deletes all the other noise around us.
How The RAS Influences The Law of Attraction
The above being true it makes sense then that if we strongly believe in something or don’t believe in something and our beliefs and thoughts form part of our filters our conscious mind will only be presented with information that supports our thoughts and beliefs. Henry Ford once wisely said, “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” . Thus when you believe you having a bad day your RAS simply deletes all the good parts and you only notice all the bad things. If you revisited that day you would probably find there were many good parts. You just didn’t notice them. If you believe that the world is a bad place your RAS will present you with all the proof you need to make that reality true for you. The keywords being TRUE FOR YOU. What we believe ultimately becomes a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy.
How does this link to the Law of Attraction?
According to The Law of Attraction, you first ask for what you desire, then truly believe it will come to you, and finally, put positive emotional energy behind it. With the RAS in play, if you firmly believe in your goal, your internal radar will spot opportunities and information that align with that belief. This drives you toward actions that lead to your desired outcome, often without you even realizing it.
Example: If you believe that life is full of opportunities, your RAS will make you notice them everywhere. As you seize more opportunities, your belief strengthens, creating a cycle of success. Conversely, if you believe opportunities are rare, your RAS will filter them out, and you’ll likely miss out on chances that come your way.
How to use your RAS to your advantage?
Understanding how your unconscious mind works can help you eliminate self-limiting beliefs and negative thought patterns. By adjusting your mental filters, you can decide your reality and attract the outcomes you desire. Remember, you play a significant role in manifesting your reality—whether through actions you consciously take or through subtle, unconscious behaviors.
Final Thoughts
In summary, The Law of Attraction isn’t just some mystical idea. There’s real science behind how our brains filter information and shape our reality. Whether you believe you’re manifesting your desires through a higher power or through your actions, the key takeaway is this: your thoughts, beliefs, and emotions play a significant role in the outcome. Positive vibes attract positive things—so choose wisely what you focus on!
